Stage Name: Jean Arthur Birth Name: Gladys Georgianna Greene Occupation: Movie, Stage Actress / Pinup Model / Drama Teacher Years Active: 1923–1975 Notable Works: Jean Arthur was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1944 for her performance in The More the Merrier (1943) but is probably best known for her feature roles in three Frank Capra films: Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936 with Gary Cooper), You Can't Take It With You (1938), and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) both films with Jimmy Stewart and championed the everyday heroine. Her first talking movie a hilarious comedy The Whole Towns Talking (1935) opposite Edward G. Robinson and her last film was Shane (1953 with Allan Ladd) is also very good. Date/Place Birth: October 17, 1900 (1900-10-17); Plattsburgh, New York, U.S.A.; 20 miles south of the Canadian border Date/Death/Cause: Jean Arthur died June 19, 1991 from heart failure at the age of 90 in Carmel California, Carmel-by-the-Sea; her ashes scattered off of nearby Point Lobos, California, USA. Spouse(s) & Children: Jean Arthur married photographer Julian Anker in 1928 but it was annulled after one day; married producer Frank Ross, Jr. in 1932, divorced in 1949; Jean Arthur never had any children. Short Biography: The entertainment career of Jean Arthur spanned four decades and she gave some incanting memorable performances; making few friends, signing few autographs, rarely granting interviews and leaving almost 90 movies for us to enjoy which she made in spite of a chronic case of camera fright; when she retired she almost became a recluse, she was a high caliber stage actress a bit odd and an interesting person to say the least… Jean Arthur quote:"I guess I became an actress because I didn't want to be myself." Interesting Jean Arthur life information excerpted from a biography about her titled Jean Arthur: The Actress Nobody Knew |
