The two sisters are both among the last few surviving female stars from Hollywood's Golden Age but regretfully Joan has been estranged from her sister Olivia for many decades, not speaking at all since 1975.

Among her other talents, Miss Fontaine has been a licensed pilot, writer, a champion ballonist, an expert horse rider, a prize-winning tuna fisherman, and a hole-in-one golfer, an excellent chef and a licensed interior decorator. The young de Havilland girls (Joan and Sister) had chronic health problems sending them to the U.S. in 1919 and her family was in turmoil which eventually led to her parents separation and divorce and she moved back and forth between the United States and Japan before returning to the U.S. at 17 years old to begin her stage acting career in her late teens with various west coast stage companies under the name Joan Burfield; her stage debut was in the West Coast production of Call It A Day in 1935. She also used the name Joan Burfield when she made her feature film debut in No More Ladies, 1935 in which she had a minor role. In 1937, she appeared on the screen as Joan Fontaine mostly in B movies. Two exceptions were A Damsel in Distress, 1937 opposite Fred Astaire and Gunga Din, 1939 opposite Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. Joan Fontaines Hollywood movie career really took off during the 1940s and she made many good movies and became an American Citizen in 1943. Joan also starred in many well produced Broadway plays such as Forty Carats and The Lion in Winter and did some sporadic TV work as well. Her last appearance on the big screen was The Devil's Own in 1966. Her last public TV appearance was Good King Wenceslas which was a made for TV film.
