Women and Children and other Americans doing their bit for the war from back home in the United States: Help from the homefront was summoned during World War 1 in the early 1900s when farming was hard work and a great deal of labor was required to raise crops. World War I was mostly a ground war in which the invading Germans confiscated or destroyed food supplies. In order to avoid rationing at home and still deliver food to Europe and the military, President Woodrow Wilson appointed Herbert Hoover as head of the Food Administration. Hoover succeeded in cutting domestic consumption of foods needed overseas like sugar and wheat. One of the important methods used was to encourage home gardening "victory gardens," by women and children. These beautiful posters were some of the propaganda weapons used to help us win the war from back home in the United States. |
