Jes Wilhelm Schlaikjer 
American Artist, Patriot Painter (1897- 1982)
Interestingly the talented American artist that designed and painted this beautiful red cross poster was not born in America or any other country as a matter of fact, the painter Jes Wilhelm Schlaikjer was born 1897 on the open seas in an ocean liner in route to the United States. He was a prolific painter and illustrator; he painted landscapes and portraits as well as some pulp art, he did illustration work for numerous national American magazines; his artwork appeared in Woman's Home Companion, American Magazine, Collier's, Red Book Magazine, American Legion Monthly as well as others.
During world war two he became official Artist of the U.S. War Department, with a studio in the Pentagon. He issued many wartime inspirational posters for morale and recruitment. He painted portraits of important United States military men and leaders of the nation, including Eisenhower, Patton and many others. Some of these art works hang still in the War College in Washington in Washington, D.C.
After his wartime contributions, he maintained a artist studio in Washington D. C. painting portraits of many important social, political and business persons.
