Famous Nazi Berlin Book Burning of May 10, 1933.
A few months after Hitler became Germany's Chancellor in May of 1933, a torchlight parade of thousands of students and SA members reveled its way down Berlin's principal street to a square across from the University of Berlin where the parade ended and thousands of books and manuscripts were burned, some twenty thousand were eventually consumed by the fire. Among the destroyed were works of world famous writers such as Thomas and Henrich Mann, Albert Einstein, Emil Zola, Andre Gide, Marcel Proust, Jack London, Upton Sinclair, Helen Keller and H. G. Wells. A student proclamation had declared that any book "which acts subversively on Germany's future or strikes at the root of German thought, the German home and the driving forces of German people" should be burned. This dramatic event out of the dark ages was captured in pictures and on film and broadcast around the world.
