Ben Shaun the artist who painted this poster was born in Kovno, Lithuania, Ben Shahn's early education was informal, consisting mainly of studying passages from the Bible. Copying biblical texts as a child inspired a lifelong interest in lettering and calligraphy, and many of his compositions use words, names, and quotations as formal elements. Shahn's family immigrated to Brooklyn, New York, when he was eight.
Shahn began his path to becoming an artist in New York City, where he was first trained as a lithographer. Shahn's love for lithography, letters and graphic design is apparent in his later prints and paintings which often include the combination of text and image. Shahn's primary painting medium was egg tempera, popular among other social realist artists as well.
During the war years of 1942-43, Shahn worked for the Office of War Information (OWI), but his pieces lacked the preferred patriotism of the day and only two of his posters were published.
