Similar posters, different messages and target audience.

This poster was released in at least two different versions at two different times in 1943 and most likely aimed at two different audiences. Both poster versions have at the top a black and white pen and ink or engraving of an awe-inspiring eagle clutching in its talons the American flag bunched up on a pole and below the presidential quote is the text identifying Roosevelt as the author of the quote: The President of the United States February 3, 1943 text on top of an image that is the great seal of the president. The two similar U.S. citizen recruitment posters are OWI poster number 45 (above) and no. 75 (below); both use a quote of United States President Franklin Delano Roosevelt taken from a letter written to Henry L. Stimson, Secretary of War. The second poster OWI #75 (below) has the most complete quote and is more aimed towards those American citizens with ancestry from enemy axis countries like Germans and Japanese in part it reads:
"No loyal citizen of the United States should be denied the democratic right to exercise the responsibilities of his citizenship, regardless of his ancestry.
"The principle on which this country was founded and by which it has always been governed is that Americanism is a matter of the mind and heart. (Then set apart and using red ink:)
"Americanism is not, and never was, a matter of race or ancestry.
(Then this sentence from the letter is omitted from both posters: "A good American is one who is loyal to this country and to our creed of liberty and democracy."; this last sentence is the only one used in the first more abbreviated poster(above):)
"Every loyal American citizen should be given the opportunity to serve this country wherever his skill will make the greatest contribution -- whether it be in the ranks of our armed forces, war production, agriculture, government, service or other work essential to the war effort."
(then with both posters follows the text indentifying the president as author, the February 3 1943 date and the Great Seal of the United States of Americal)

Second World War American patriotic posters like "Every loyal American citizen should be given the opportunity to serve this country wherever his skill will make the greatest contribution" helped unite Americans and mobilize the private and industrial sectors; U.S. citizens of every age, gender, and walk of life did their part to support the war effort, allied military and defeat the axis powers.

U.S. citizens hoped that the Axis powers could be stopped without American military support and hoped America could avoid direct involvement in World War 2 but that all changed the morning of December 7 when Japan blindsided the U.S. military with bombs in the attack of Pearl Harbor Hawaii and other U.S. military outposts. The military might of the United States of America of course responded with a powerful vengeance but leaders knew that troops could not win the war alone. The American citizens rallied for the troops and swift mobilization of American citizenry and industry during World War II was an achievement without precedent in speed, scale, complexity and duration. This achievement can be partially attributed to the federal government's intensive program to marshal the contributions of people of all ages and from all walks of life. Many Americans were willing to give up all luxuries and devote all spare time to the war effort to achieve victory. The posters in this gallery helped motivate and mobilize private citizens to find non-military support jobs and produce huge amounts of war materials.
