The U.S. WWII Rubber Industry:
During the Second World War Japan invaded South East Asia cutting off the USA from its established supplies of natural rubber so the Americans turned towards natural rubber conservation and like this poster promotes, recycling scrap rubber. Additionally the United States and others experimented with alternate sources of natural rubber like wild rubber gathered in the Congo and Amazon Basins and cultivation of rubber tree (Hevea) alternate plants suitable to the U.S. climate which bare rubber like guayule. By the end of WWII with massive assistance from the government a wartime developed U. S. synthetic rubber industry was producing huge producing almost 75,000 tonnes in 1945. |
