The Artist who created this beautiful Navy Recruiting Poster was noteworthy Naval artist McClelland Barclay (1891-1943) In June 1938, he was appointed Assistant Naval Constructor with the US Naval Reserve. In mid-1940, Barclay prepared experimental camouflage designs for Navy combat aircraft, but evaluation tests revealed that pattern camouflage was of little use for aircraft. Within weeks of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Barclay completed the first of many recruiting posters for the Navy.
During World War II Barclay contributed many posters, illustrations and officer portraits for the Navy before being reported missing in action, in the Pacific theatre, aboard a Landing ship, tank (L. S. T.) which was torpedoed off the Solomon Islands. Before World War II Barclay had paintings and illustrations published in numerous well known magazines and was most noted for his ability to paint strikingly beautiful women.
