When is Columbus Day 2012 observed in America? Columbus Day in 2012 is on Monday, the 8th of October 2012. Columbus Day is observed in many countries, in the United States of America, Columbus Day is always celebrated on the second Monday in October. Christopher Columbus was an Italian sailor/explorer who was working for King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain looking for riches like gold, silver, lands to claim for Spain and a faster ocean trade route to Asia when in 1492 he discovered the Americas first making landfall on an island in the Bahamas which would be named San Salvador. Christopher Columbus Day celebrates this man and his discovery of the Americas which led to its European colonization.
Was Christopher Columbus the first European to Discover North America? Not really, most historians believe it was a Norse explorer Lief Ericson who first landed on North America (Canada) nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus set foot on San Salvador and the Norse were already in Greenland before that.
