The classic coin operated video game was first released in Japan in 1979. When Pac-Man was released besides PONG most all coin operated video games were space shooter games like Space Invaders, Defender and Asteroids. Pac-man created a new genre of video arcade games which appealed to both sexes. More than a video arcade game Pac-Man was a landmark video game which almost instantly became a social phenomena and 1980 icon of popular culture; it spawned a bevy of related merchandise, video game spin-offs, an animated television series and even a top 40's single.
It is fun to look back nostalgically at the history of the classic coin-operated arcade games; in the 1970's and 1980's I liked to play and I dropped a lot of quarters in these machines. As far as coin-operated video game history goes "
Galaxy Game " was actually the first coin-operated arcade video game, it was very popular but it was not commercially available only one was produced. The first commercially available coin-operated video arcade game was "
Computer Space " but it didn't become real popular because it was a little complicated (considering the times) to play.
Now it is pay back time; you can make up for all those quarters lost in those classic coin operated video arcade machines and play classic video arcade games here online in flash versions for free!
