The common name OPOSSUM or POSSUM is applied to many animals around the globe; South America has over 60 species of opossums (www.knowyoursto.com/didelphidae/...), Australia is home to 25 plus species of possums (www.knowyoursto.com/...), this webpage is dedicated to the North American Virgina Opossum scientifically known as Didelphis virginianus. These interesting primitive survivors from the dinosaur age are the only living marsupial in North America and have a pouch like a kangaroo where they suckle and raise their young Truly a bizarre animal, the opossum also possesses a prehensile tail like a monkey for holding on to branches, only the babies can support their whole weight with their tail though; they have an opposable thumb like humans and 50 sharp teeth, more than any other mammal. These unique features retained since the dinosaur era, make Didelphis the most primitive surviving marsupial family known from North American fossils as long as 100 million years ago.
These 6 to 9 pound animals originally native to the eastern United States were enjoyed as food especially in the south, they were introduced to the west during the depression (probably as a food source) where they now are common. Opossums usually only have two sets of babies each year. Only thirteen days after the female conceives, 6 to 16 babies are born. They crawl on their own to her fur-lined pouch on her lower abdomen and find one of thirteen nipples to suck on. They are nurtured on their mother's milk and stay in the pouch for two months. After this time, they have developed fur and are about 2 inches long not including their tails. They then crawl out of their mother's pouch and she will carry them on her back for two more weeks. After another month, the babies have completely matured and then are on their own. This entire infant period lasts only three and a half months. Females are sexually mature by seven months old, so it is possible for them to have their own babies that same year. |
