Americans are not the only ones who celebrate the sacrifice American Soldiers made for freedom in WWII. You may think that although most of our fallen soldiers from WWII and all wars were on foreign soil and often the U.S. armed forces fight for the rights and freedoms of foreigners…we are not respected or appreciated by those non-Americans who we have fought and died for but this is not always the case. One of the best examples is the eastern Europe where a WWII memorial liberation celebration takes place in a small town in the Czech Republic, called Pilsen (Plzen ). Pilsen conducts the Liberation Celebration of their rule from the Nazis by General George Patton's 3rd Army May 6, 1945.

Last WWII American United States Army Air Force Pilot to be Killed in Europe

Also near Pilsen another bit of WWII American History, the crash site of Lieutenant Virgil P. Kirkham, the last recorded American USAAF pilot to be killed in Europe during World War Two. It was Lt. Virgil Kirkham's 82nd mission and one that he had volunteered for. After the 20-year-old pilot's P-47 Thunderbolt plane was shot down and he was killed in action, a young 14-year-old Czechoslovakian girl, Zdenka Sladkova, (photo bottom right) was so moved by his sacrifice she made a vow to care for him and his memory. For 65 straight years, Zdenka, who is now 79-years-old, took on the responsibility to care for Virgil's crash site and memorial near her home. On May 4th, 2010 she was recognized and received an award presented by the Mayor of Zdenka's home town of Trhanova, Czech Republic , for her sacrifice and extraordinary effort to honor this true American hero.
